Ideas for next year or this summer:
I think I need to create Paper Packets: One sheet with a description of the paper’s topic/theme (grading criteria, audience, goal, etc.) with a small example of the paper on the back. [It wouldn't need to be more than a page, really.]
And I also think I need to cover what to do at every point of the paper more too. Some aren’t understanding how to conclude a profile versus a memoir & it is different. Work on transitions needs to be done as well. Maybe I could print off some paragraphs that need transitions between ‘em (or take my own papers and delete the transitions)… and for 120, early on, I need to give them a sample paper without parenthetical citations and see how they would place citations in there. It’ll get them thinking, “When does one need citations?”

Sounds good — but unfortunate that they didn’t learn that before they got to you.
Yea, good point.
I was a high school teacher once, so I know the difficulties they face…
it would be nice if all the students I “got” had had the English teachers I had in high school; they were amazing.
