These are things I know or have been told. Education needs to be more relevant.
What can I do about it?
Keep learning. Keep trying new things. Keep an open mind. So, my students are on Facebook a lot… or playing games during class time, and,
yes, this does irritate me. The game-playing is like a slap in the face, but there may be something to Facebook… using it as the catalyst to a major project of some sort. I think for English 110 next spring, I’m going to bring back the Stretch Project AND include a survey element with it…. they’ll have to survey people on their subject, etc. It’ll bring in tech writing to a certain extent (which the 105ers will like?) and it’ll cause the project to go beyond them to everyone around them. It’s something to consider.
