Perceptions. Perspectives.
It dawned on me (again) last night, that my perceptions of people aren’t the same perceptions others have. We dined, for Tina’s semi-surprise bday party, with a couple who knew my ex-boyfriend. Their son was friends w/him, etc.; their son was even the best man at the wedding I guess. And while I’m way past all that hoopla (for so, so many reasons), it was interesting to realize that hey, these people will never view him like I view/viewed him.
Once I got home, I thought the same… about my posse on campus. I have a crew of people I joke with all the time. From the students’ perspective, they probably see all of us as nerdy, boring teachers. But, we’re really very cool – oooops, there’s my perspective again!
Context is SO important, kids.
con~text
–noun
1. the parts of a written or spoken statement that precede or follow a specific word or passage, usually influencing its meaning or effect: You have misinterpreted my remark because you took it out of context. 2. the set of circumstances or facts that surround a particular event, situation, etc.
