a)Evaluation of Visual Texts: Compare & evaluate two or more visual texts that you believe embody different values. You might, for example, compare political campaign videos, book covers, product packages, or even fashions. [at back of chapter, example in chapter]
b)Cultural Evaluation: Drawing on your expertise as a consumer of popular culture, explain why you admire a book, movie, TV series, musical piece, artist or performer that most people do not. Or, take the opposite approach. [at back of chapter, example in chapter]
Chapter 5: Causal Analysis
Possible assignments – One of the options for the Analysis Project, the new P4?
a) Cultural Analysis: Identify a trend you have noticed or some change in society or culture related to language. Write an analysis of the phenomenon, considering causes and/or potential consequences of this. Then illustrate the trend with images/examples that suggest its cultural reach or significance. Spend some time at the beginning of the paper describing the trend and proving that it is real. [at back of chapter, example in chapter]

a)Textual Analysis of Song Lyrics: Conduct a close reading of a favorite song. Tease out all the meanings and strategies you can uncover and show readers how the song works. [at back of chapter, example in chapter]
b) Cultural Analysis: Examine several works of art or popular culture that reflect what you find to be an important trend or attitude in society. You may detect, for example, common themes in films, TV series, novels, or even video games. Show how the trend crosses genres or changes how people think or behave. [at back of chapter]
