  • English 110 + Grammar, Part 2.

Click on this link to see what we did during the last class time, (which was Monday).
Today, Wednesday, we’ll hand in the My Words. From there, I’ll explain the activities for today. We’ll be READING (using Activity #4 below) & summarize each page in 2+ sentences (10pts) and then play around with 10 more GRAMMAR TERMS (Activity #1 below). We’ll staple the READING SUMMARIES and 20 GRAMMAR TERMS together. All this is due at the end of class time. Please use any additional time to work on P3. For the next class time, please try out Activities #2, #3 and #5. Bring some sort of evidence to class that you played with those web sites.

Possible Activity #1: GRAMMATICAL TERMS. Head to this site & pick 10 grammar terms. Copy and paste the ten terms you plan to use into a Word document. Create your own sentences using those terms. [10-20pts?]
Possible Activity #2: Head to – http://www.grammaropolis.com/ = Games = Word Sort + Fun Quiz.
Possible Activity #3: Head to – http://www.grammarphile.com/ = Look at 10 entries? Summarize what you find.
Possible Activity #4: READINGS. The Oatmeal – Misspelling, Semicolons, Apostrophes, and Using I.E. in a sentence. Read read read!
Possible Activity #5: Head to – http://englishplus.com/grammar/ and read the parts.
Possible Activity #6: MISTAKES. Head to this site and create a sentence with each of the errors. Then fix them. [2pts x 12 sentences = 24pts + 1pt for name? = 25pts.]
Possible Activity #7: CLICHES. Head to this site and click through the cliches (or go here for a huge list). Find 5 and use them in a sentence. Then create 5 of your own unique cliches. [10-20pts.]

  • English110: Student Projects, Take 2.

Some more stuff, because I know you like it.
    From Ivonne’s paper-
Camus was an Existentialist, and he explained it. “The existentialism maintain that the individual is solely responsible for giving his or her own life meaning and for living that life passionately and sincerely, in spite of many existential obstacles and distractions including despair, angst, absurdity, alienation, and boredom.”

    From Skylar’s paper-
“I think the world is run by C students.”  ~Al McGuire
    From Krista’s paper -
“I don’t believe in accidents. There are only encounters in history. There are no accidents.” ~Pablo Picasso
“Sibling relationships…outlast marriages, survive the death of parents, resurface after quarrels that would sink any friendship. They flourish in a thousand incarnations of closeness and distance, warmth, loyalty and distrust.” ~Erica E. Goode
    From D.J.’s paper-
“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asks receives; and he that seeks finds; and to him that knocks it shall be opened.” – Matthew 7:7-8
    From Emily’s paper-

  • English110: Student Projects.

One of the last projects my English 110 students put together is a multi-genre paper answering the question: “Who Am I?” I get really great papers (to read at the end of an exhausting semester) and they get to write about themselves (and do some research about themselves too); some do complain about writing about themselves which is still strange to me. :o )
Here are some of the things I’ve found that are cool:
    From Kelly’s paper-
“We should all start to live before we get too old. Fear is stupid. So are regrets.”  — Marilyn Monroe
    Randomness from RaeAnn’s paper-
    1. I’m the kinda girl who walks into a chair and apologizes.
    3. Not only to I fall down stairs, I trip up them as well- now that takes talent.
    4. Don’t follow in my footsteps; I walk into walls.
    9. Forget about the people in the past, theres a reason they didn’t make it to your future.
    10. Be a freak, being cool is over-rated.
    21. Lead me not into temptation. I can find it myself.
    24. I’m not prejudiced. I hate everyone equally.
    From Michael’s paper -
    Metallica- Nothing Else Matters
So close no matter how far couldn’t be much more from the heart forever trusting who we are and nothing else matters never opened myself this way life is ours,
we live it our way all these words I don’t just say and nothing else matters trust I seek and I find in you every day for us something new open mind for a different view
    and nothing else matters
never cared for what they do never cared for what they know but I know
so close no matter how far couldn’t be much more from the heart forever trusting who we are and nothing else matters
Find out who you are and do it on purpose.
    — Dolly Parton
    From Chris’ paper-
“Education is learning what you didn’t even know you didn’t know.”

    Daniel J. Boorstin
    From other students’ papers-

  • Images I plan to use w/my online classes from the spring semester and beyond. I should create a few more for P4: GBP, P5: Chuck, and P6: Shortfolio… here I come Flickr! (The Creative Commons area, that is.)

  • WL240 Student Projects…

My Online World Lit (240) students tried out Tagxedo as a substitution for their typical My Words activity last week. They had to take a passage, from somewhere in our book, and let Tagxedo work its magic with the words. Here are three student samples; I think they are neat – I had to show them off. You should play with the web site too; you might like it.

  • English 120 Images…

I asked students, for half of their required discussion board entry/class blog entry, to find an image on Flickr (again, hopefully from the Creative Commons area) that related to something in our reading this week (out of the book: everything’s an argument) and then place a quote they liked on the image using Pixlr.com. Here are a few neat ones.
