organization

  • homework Well, I put in grades just in case I don't want to venture up here tomorrow... I probably will though since I didn't get the start on the online English 120 that I wanted to. I think I have wrapped up English 105 well, and I am 3/4s of the way through the English 110 syllabus. I broke up the semester into units which just helps me understand what I am doing throughout each piece... I think that will help the students and me: "Oh, we're in Unit 3 now and that unit focuses on______."

I am using this cartoon => in the English 110 syllabus. I think it's funny...

So, I think my 3-4 hours in the office today did some good. I think. And I may increase those hours a bit by reading at home: the English 110 class will be reading Rule of the Bone, and the online English 120 will be reading Fahrenheit 451. I've read Fahrenheit many times, but I've only gotten into the beginning of Rule of the Bone in the past.

  • It was an itty bitty teeny weeny... to-do list for today & tomorrow:
    - Gather items for preparation (all classes placed in different folders: 105, 110, 120, 240) & find items I'd like to revise (look back in notes from conferences, blog, etc)
    - Put all updated syllabi (ones used this semester) on red USB & print off drafts (adding next spring's dates) for easy transportation over break
    - Start to revise syllabi...

    Next week:
    - Enter final grades
    - Begin to redo Online English 120
    - Clean office... file away stuff/organize materials better

  • So, I made a list. For the next few crazy days. Will I follow it? That is good question. Hopefully, I'll get done what I need to get done with the least amount of stress. Hopefully. I think it was a great plan to leave this weekend open for getting caught up on anything I needed to get caught up on. I have been traveling every which way for too many weekends, etc.

    ---

After writing my entry yesterday (post 1pm class), I had a great bunch of presentations occur in my 2pm class (not only had they saved their songs correctly, but most of their PPTs focused on abstract issues). So much so that I asked the students to copy their PPTs to the main teacher station so I could transfer their PPT projects onto my little red USB (was on Sale for $14!). And then the 3pm had many successful PPTs too even though some of theirs may be considered less "deep" as far as stories/topics are concerned. With that said, I don't know if one can argue that a story about someone's life (including partying & girls) is less complex than a story about 9/11 or the war in Iraq. They are just different stories to tell. Some, I think, would judge harshly, but when if a teacher were to step back, he/she would see that each student is using the same process and the same strategies to organize.

    ---

And speaking of organizing, I need to organize my things better. I have a few filing cabinets; they should be filled properly with folders I can grab on a whim. I now have things listed generally, and I think those need to change into more specific units. Over break, I will have to devise a better organization system... a folder for the PPT Project, a folder for Introductory Days (those first few days of each semester), a folder for REVISION exercises, a folder for INTRO PARA ideas, etc. Be more specific. Just as I used to be a wordy writer and then changed into a more technical writer, I also need to change from general folders and piles to more specific ones. It'll be helpful in the end. Oh, and I should go through my USBs and desktop folders (both office computer & iBook) and delete old versions, etc.

  • Monday night: Christmas shopping in FF.
Tuesday night: TA meeting & Laundry?
Wednesday night: Family photo & dinner in Fargo.
Thursday night: Earl & Office, of course!
    Friday night: ?
Weekend: Grading... finish up English 110's P3s, English 105's Proposals/Projects (any early portfolios)
Next Monday: Regular classes (110: Final Test, Eval of PPT, My Words; 105: Portfolios, FC Presentations)
Next Tuesday-Thursday: Finish up this semester & start to prepare for Spring...

I am still stuck on my dad and my brother as far as Christmas gifts go, but I have time... I am quite content to leave this weekend for grading... curled up with hot chocolate, keeping warm in my apt with my three short Christmas trees hanging out in the corner... This is how I hope things go.

Fifth Class (part of load): English Composition 120 Online

Sixth Class (overload): World Literature 240 Online

So, this is what my spring semester may look like. It looks like it'll be a bit easier to manage than this semester. No more five classes in a row on MWF at least. I really should shut up and not complain. Done and done.

  • I'd like to get to the point where I have lessons broken up either daily or weekly on a disk/CD/storage device. Handouts that go with the lesson, possible visuals either on the device or listed as to where they can be found online, activities... I have already started to create categories within my folders for English 105, Punk English 110, etc such as "Fall 2006" so the more updated items are together and I know when I used/created what.
