  • I spy?

Why is is that I like watching students at work?

Right now, I’ve assigned them their 10 min writing prompt = read the website of 101 George Carlin Quotes & respond to one.
Some are reading; some are writing. It’s like I want to see the imaginary neurons bouncing all over the place.
Next on our agenda: creating double entendres. Last semester I did these for the first time, and the students liked them. Sure, they can end up “perverted” but it shows them how language works in strange ways. I think we’ll put them up on the board like I did last time, too, so we can laugh at them.
Lastly, I need to introduce P1 & P1.5. And we’ll have two things due for Friday (scholarship research & more of GC).
  • Dogs and Shoes.

My two latest obsessions, as shown to me last night, are dog breeds and shoes.
I spent about an hour looking at the former before spending an hour on the latter.
    Yeah.
Possibly pathetic, but at least I’m just looking…
Okay, I did bid on some sexy Jeffrey Campbell heels via eBay last night; but I didn’t adopt a dog.
There’s a half Great Dane, half something else at the shelter in town right now. His name is Titan. He’s HUGE.

Size is a weird issue for me. I like broad-shouldered men and massive dogs that look like bears.
The Leonberger is a dog that comes from German; they look like lions. So cool!

Anyhow… I came on “here” to figure out what I need to accomplish this week. It’s quieter than last week, which is NICE.
I think next week will be tame, too. At least, I hope so. I can’t handle total-utter-chaos back-to-back; it gives me pimples.

I’ve assessed the online students’ stuff (Eng120) & I think I caught up on Monday with the on-campus grading.
All three classes have yet to get their votes tallied, however. So that’s something to consider wrapping up this week.

In my Eng110s… I have P4 Presentations going on in one, and P6 stuff in the other. Tomorrow, I’d like to do some sort of WC activity with the P6 crowd…
I could do the human simulation, I suppose. Or basically some kind of game. Is there a Jeopardy about Citation?
Hell, we haven’t watched a cool video for awhile; I could do that, too. I have a lot of cool ones.
(Or I just found a few Prezis about existentialism? http://prezi.com/ps-9mnvxb9a9/existentialism-and-the-meaning-of-life/
    Or about “Who Am I?” = http://prezi.com/explore/search/?search=who+am+i …
    Or this on TED: http://www.ted.com/talks/chris_abani_muses_on_humanity.html)

    Huh.

So, beyond adding in activities here and there this week, I don’t have much to assess.
    Woot woot.
With that said, here are other things I could tackle instead:
    — Creative Writing Alternative Style handout for next Tuesday!
    — Creative Writing 2013 Planning.
    — New Pearson TOC.
    — Other planning (booklets for G.C. for Fall, changes to online Eng120 for summer, etc.).

  • I think instead of jumping right into P6 on Monday, I could save the handout sharing until Tuesday (for the Ag Section)… instead, I’ll grab their Sedaris assignments ( 2 My Words activities, sort of) & P5 Letters tomorrow and then assign the ABCs of them to prep for P6.

And then on Tuesday, after talking about P6, I’ll assign a fake future resume for Thursday. Also, we may want to move the P6 due date to Monday night?

Then for Thursday to Friday, another My Words activity… and maybe a Works Cited activity of some sort? That new Fix This activity maybe?

For next Monday, our last Monday together, they could ask questions about P6. I’ll introduce P7, too. I think this is a potential group project, so they’ll have some of Monday & all of Tues/Thurs to work on it. The individual Final Test will be assigned Tues or Thurs? Then, we’ll choose a deadline during Finals Week like Wed at midnight?

  • It’s a Windy, Winding Road.

I’ve come out from the other side of it all.
    Thus far.
There is still a lot on my plate, but I’m okay. I will lessen my load. I will narrow my focus.
    I will conquer all.
I’ve already lowered my stress when it comes to watching students’ P5s. I used to get uppity when the projects weren’t perfect or didn’t work, etc., but I’ve calmed myself with all that.
    It’s nice.

    girl quote strength

I have many ideas for the Fall.
    Many.
I’d like to have a better focus for the small assignments. I’d like to have everything laid out with Carlin and Sedaris, as I do online with each week’s CB.
And I know it’s possible; already today, I made a more generic list of the Sedaris readings and activities for the P5 packet. What an improvement!

  • Final Assessments.

Eng110, 9am: P6, P7 (the Shortfolio), and the Final My Words Test.
Eng110, 3pm: P6, P7 (the Shortfolio) due at 3pm today, and the Final My Words Test.

Eng120, on-campus: Utopia Presentations today at 1pm, Final My Words Test & last CB = Wednesday before midnight.

Eng120, online, two sections: Last week’s assignment – a bonus CB to assess today?
Eng120, online, two sections: Shortfolios due Wednesday, Final My Words Test due Wednesday, and last CB due Wed.

  • Officially, I’ll have P6, P7 (the Shortfolio), and the Final My Words Test to assess next week in both of my English 110 classes. That’s not too bad. Oh, and I will have to look over the project evaluation charts they fill out next Monday, but that is about it. Yeah. Whew. It’s almost the end.

Meanwhile, I’m typically tired on a daily basis. I think everyone is. Just a little. However, today, I’m exhausted. After my workout, I felt like I needed a nap. And I slept all the way from about 11pm to 5:30am. Yeah. Okay, that’s not my typical 7-8 hours, but still. I’ve been feeling that way a lot, even more so after starting to workout more regularly. I could nap right now if it wasn’t for the fact that a) I’m at work, b) I have to teach in 15 min, and c) I just sucked down a 1/4 of a Pepsi Max.

Isn’t a person supposed to feel more energized by exercise? Sometimes, I guess I am, but it’s like sugar. Once it wears off, I want my couch and PJs and fan. It could be that I’m training with long runs. I think shorter, vigorous exercise keep the energy higher longer. But 5+ mile runs? They suck the happiness out of me BECAUSE they are stress relievers; so much so, that I zonk out – when I do take naps after – immediately without “the lists” going through my head. They clear my head and make my body feel pretty good. But once I’m done, I crash. This happened when I was first in cross-country in high school; we trained the month of August with 7am runs and 7pm runs. I slept in between and lost a lot of weight. But I’m not 17 anymore, so why do I still need the sleep? Weird.

Everyone’s body is different. I suppose I have to remember that.

Anyhow, everyone’s assessment schedules are different too. I wanted to remind myself of at least one class’s line-up for next week. Plus, it was a nice way to tie everything I wanted to blog about in one package. With a bow on top.

  • English 110 and English 120.

Work Day for P6; you are not required to come to class, but with Agawasie Day tomorrow, you may want to finish up P6 and upload it to the correct Dropbox.
    P6 is due Friday.
I’ll introduce the Shortfolio & Final My Words Test on Friday as well.
    |||||||
Students will work on the Shortfolio (the Utopia Project) in class today.
Other things to complete in class today:
—A small handout containing Plagiarism assessment (it’s a campus thing).
—Introduce the Final My Words Test with a handout.
CB for this week (first in Final Stuff unit) is worth bonus points.
The presentations are next Monday; our last CB/evaluation/reflection* will be assigned next Monday, too.
*I haven’t decided what that will be yet.

  • Students handed in their My Words (if they hadn’t placed them online under Unit 6 already) and I wrote down who had what for the ABC Experiment. I assigned possibly our last small writing assignment for Wednesday & then they had time to work on P6. P6 is due Friday; I’ll introduce the Shortfolio & Final My Words Test on Friday as well.
Students will work on the Shortfolio (the Utopia Project) in class today and Wednesday; there may be small assignments in class on these two days. The presentations are next Monday. The Final My Words Test and our last CB will be assigned next Monday, too.
